Brief Background on the Institute:
Changangkha Middle Secondary School was first established in 1961 as Thimphu Primary School.
It was renamed to Changangkha Primary School in 1973 under the leadership of Mrs. Namchu. The
school was upgraded to Lower Secondary School in 1996 when Mrs. Kunzang Choden was heading
the school. The school has had numerous Headmasters and Headmistresses who helped mould and
shape students and produced some of the best alumni in the country.
In 2012 the school further got upgraded to middle secondary school under the leadership of Mr.
Jigme Dorji. The first batch of class X graduated in 2013 with 36% of students qualifying for
government schools under the leadership of Mr. Sonam Phuntsho. At present the school is led by
Mr. Nyendo who joined the school with effect from 19th February 2014.
In 2016 the school received awards for the significant improvement in classes III and X board
exams. In 2017 the school created a history by receiving an award for the best top 10 schools of
Bhutan securing 5th position with the qualifying percentage of 75.3%. The qualifying percentage of
class X has been on a progressive improvement every year ever since the present principal took
over the principal-ship.
Presently, the school has an enrolment of 939 students including 67 Special Educational
Needs(SEN)students with various disabilities. There are 68 teaching staff including 1 JICA
volunteer Health and Physical Education instructorand 14 non-teaching staff. There are classes
from PP – X with a total of 31 sections of regular classes and 10 sections of SEN classes.
The SEN unit was formally inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Pem
Wangchuck in 2002. The Ministry of Education started the SEN programme as a project funded by
a private donor through Bhutan Foundation. Then Changangkha became one of the pilot schools to
cater to differently abled students in the country. The school provides special classes to the special
needs students besides including them in the mainstream class activities. Ramps have been built
around the school to enable easy access to the playground, toilets, and classroomsto our students
with special needs. The dedicated teachers provide inclusion of these students in the teaching
learning processes in the mainstream classes along with additional lessons during pull-out classes.
Apart from the academic studies, a series of co-curricular activities are carried out as well. The
school’s main annual functions are the morning assembly performances by classes PP to VIII,
morning speeches by classes IX and X, mass meditation on alternate Thursdays, Concert, Inter-
House Competitions, Cultural Activities, Games and Sports, Club Activities, Reading Week etc.
Lately, several new buildings have been added to the existing structures to accommodate and
facilitate quality teaching and learning. A multipurpose hall has been constructed to enable the
school to carry out variousco-curricular activities. Besides, an eight-unit academic block and a fourunit
science and IT laboratory block have also been constructed. A much needed school bus has
been provided to help especially the students with special needs to attend out of school
programmes.
