Launch of Memelakha Compost Plant

Thimphu Thromde is pleased to announce the launch of the Compost Plant at Memelakha, implemented with Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan, under the UNEP project “Closing the Bio-Cycle in Bhutan: Organic Waste to Wealth.”

The plant uses the Takakura Composting Method and mechanical composting to turn organic waste—the largest portion of household waste—into high-quality compost, reducing landfill use, methane emissions, and fertilizer imports while boosting rural agriculture, and preventing leachate from polluting soil, water, and the environment.

This pilot project contributes meaningfully to Bhutan’s National Zero Waste Goal by 2030, world’s first 100% organic nation by 2035and and supports SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities), 12 (Responsible Consumption), and 13 (Climate Action).

Thimphu Thromde would like to extend our gratitude to IGES, National Centre for Organic Agriculture, National Soil Services Centre, and waste service providers (Greener Way and GBS) for their support.
